Special Enrollment

Can you get health insurance today?

The Open Enrollment period in the Health Insurance Market is closed. But if you recently had a Life Event that makes you eligible, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment period. This means that you can get health insurance or change your health insurance plan outside of the open enrollment period. Most special enrollment periods last 60 days from the date of the Life Event that makes you eligible.

If you think this may apply to you, choose your state .

Life events that make you eligible that create a need for Special Enrollment include:

  • To get married

  • Giving birth, adopting, or fostering a minor

  • Loss of other health coverage (for example, due to job loss, divorce, loss of Medicaid or CHIP eligibility, expiration of COBRA coverage, or a health plan that is being decertified). Note: Voluntary giving up other health coverage, or terminating you for not paying your premiums, is not considered loss of coverage. Loss of coverage that is not minimum essential coverage is also not considered loss of coverage.

  • Moving to a new zip code, county or state

  • Release for imprisonment

  • Changes to citizenship or immigration status
